SPEED SCORE

Speed score is a somewhat dated metric but still has utility today. It was developed by Bill James and first appeared in his 1987 edition of The Baseball Abstract. It attempts to get at the ‘baseball speed’ a player brings to the field. A quick look at what is used to calculate it makes this clear:

The number that is generated falls between 0 – 10 and stratifies, as follows:
